Ads reveal Sony’s 24.6 megapixel A900 full-frame DSLR

It’s not quite on Sony’s schedule, but a new series of not-quite-precisely-timed ads have now revealed the company’s new full-frame A900 DSLR, which boasts a mighty 24.6 megapixels. In addition to that desirable spec, it seems you can also expect to get Sony’s Dual BIONZ image processing engine, “Intelligent Preview,” a 3-inch “Hybrid LCD,” 5 fps continuous shooting, and Sony’s SteadyShot image stabalization, to name but a few features (head on past the break for the full spec list). Of course, there’s no price or release date to be found in any of the ads, but we’re guessing Sony will be spilling those little details when it gets official with the camera next week.

Hands-on with Hitachi’s 1.5-inch thick plasma prototype

Hitachi’s 1.5-inch thick 50-inch plasma wasn’t exactly front and center like we had imagined, but it was there garnering stares nonetheless. Donning a glossy white finish and displaying nothing but floral arrangements, the set looked pretty good (though not great) in terms of visual quality. The design, however, was simply stunning. And just as promised, we did include the obligatory iPhone comparison, though you’ll have to account for the Belkin skin when drawing your conclusions. Give it a peek in the gallery below.

Sprint’s HTC Touch Diamond: September 14 for $249.99. Honest.

Now that Uncle Walt has gone and opened the floodgates, details are starting to pour in on Sprint’s imminent release of the Touch Diamond, a device that should actually manage to get the carrier damn close to the top of the Windows Mobile pile (for a short while, anyway). PC Magazine is now reporting that it’ll be available on September 14 for $249.99 on a two-year contract after $100 rebate, a sum that would put it squarely in the “average” category for on-contract smartphone pricing in these parts. Of course, with the Touch Pro allegedly just around the corner, it remains to be seen just how much love this thing is going to get; nothing like a good, old-fashioned QWERTY-versus-touchscreen fight, is there?

Adam Savage’s RFID implant activates, orders him to change his story

It’s no secret that RFID isn’t the most secure thing in the world, so we mostly took Adam Savage’s story about Discovery telling the Mythbusters to back off an episode exposing the tech’s flaws after a conference call with various cred card company lawyers as a bit of laughable corporate insecurity, but it looks like Adam got himself in a bit of trouble by sharing — Discovery’s now sending out a release in which he basically retracts the whole thing. “There’s been a lot of talk about this RFID thing, and I have to admit that I got some of my facts wrong… Texas Instruments’ account of their call with Grant and our producer is factually correct [and] the decision not to continue on with the RFID story was made by our production company, Beyond Productions, and had nothing to do with Discovery, or their ad sales department.” Sure, that doesn’t explain why he said that Tory “still gets a little white” when he remembers the phone call, or why he said RFID was “on Discovery’s radar,” but we’re guessing it has more to do with simple exaggeration than devious conspiracy. At least we hope so.

Hitachi delivering UltraThin 1.5-inch thick 50-inch plasma

Hitachi’s “UltraThin” line of TVs might not be the skinniest on the block anymore, but a new top of the line 50-inch plasma (CES prototype pictured above) keeps the size crown in their camp. Expect the Thin is In tagline to be a centerpiece for Hitachi’s booth at CEDIA, we’ll try to get some specs and in person pics (including the ubiquitous iPhone comparo) when we stop by later.

‘Get a Mac’ is Running Out of Gas

I just caught the “Pizza Box” Get a Mac spot during the Top Design premiere, and it struck me. Not because it’s particularly brilliant — it hits the same mark exactly that all the other college-related Apple ads have lately — but because I realized it was the first time I had actually paid attention to a Get a Mac ad in almost three months.

Nor have I talked about one with anybody in more than a year. People don’t even get upset about it or make parody ads anymore. PC and Mac have been up there so long that I’m expecting them to introduce their children at any minute. Worse than being annoying or controversial, Apple’s core Mac marketing campaign has become the one thing the Cupertino Collective can never allow itself to be: boring.

Apple’s been here before. Switch had its (rather desperate) day. Think Different saved Apple during its darkest times. But each of them eventually outlived its usefulness based on where Apple was as an organization.

Today, Apple has become a powerhouse in media and a top-three computer maker. The iPhone is poised to become as ubiquitous as the iPod. And Get a Mac’s playful jabs are starting to make Apple look small. “Able to run Microsoft Office” isn’t news to anyone who could be swayed by a TV ad. What’s the next narrative? How does Apple start its next growth curve, whether through marketing or design?

Hands-on: Sony shows off prototype 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer

Once again, Sony’s booth was front and center upon entering the CEDIA floor, and while most everything there was as advertised, this one particular unit stuck out. Yeah, maybe it just caught out eye because it’s around the size of a small refrigerator, but upon speaking with a company representative, we learned that it’s actually a 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer. The unit on hand was simply there for demonstrative purposes, but Sony intends to launch the BD-Live-capable, RS-232 port-packin’ beast in early 2009. There’s no word on whether it will ever interface with HTPCs, but we wouldn’t count on it. Head on over to Engadget HD for a closer look.

Widescreen DS refresh on the way?

Nintendo might be cranking out new DS Lite colors left and right, but IGN says something bigger’s brewing in Kyoto — a third iteration of the DS with dual touchscreen displays, one of them widescreen. Those are pretty significant changes, so we’d actually say that sounds more like a second-gen DS rather than another rev of the current hardware, but IGN says the rumored release date of April or May 2009 doesn’t jive with a whole new unit. We’ll see when we see — hopefully we won’t be waiting long.

Google’s Brin says Chrome headed to Android, probably

As the root of our name implies, desktop browsers aren’t really our thing in Engadget-land. Still, we’re pretty sure that you’ve managed to learn about Google’s new Chrome browser even without our assistance. However, when we hear Google’s co-founder, Sergey Brin discussing Chrome on Android, well, we’re all in. Even though neither has been released out of beta yet, Brin said that the Webkit-based Chrome browser is expected to soon supplant the Webkit-based browser in Android. “Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack,” Brin said before adding, “My guess is we’ll have ‘Chrome-like’ or something similar,” when asked about the brand name. While we have lingering doubts about the likely stability of the initial 1.0 Android OS release, version 2.0 with Chrome is likely to be killer in every sense of the word to Symbian Nokia, Microsoft, and Apple. Of course, we’ll be first in line for the HTC Dream regardless.

Sony debuts HDR-FX1000, HVR-Z5J high-def camcorders

It looks like those not willing to give up on DV tape for their HD recording needs now have a pair of new options to consider from Sony, which has just introduced its HDR-FX1000 and HVR-Z5J camcorders in Japan. The HDR-FX1000 (pictured above) is the slightly more consumer-minded of the two, with it boasting a not-outrageous price of ¥400,000 (or roughtly $3,700), and some impressive specs all around, including a 20x optical zoom, both 24p and 30p modes, and Sony’s G-series lens, which promises to deliver some top-notch images. The HVR-Z5J, on the other hand, offers some more specialized features like XLR audio inputs, PAL and NTSC compatibility, and support for the DVCAM format in addition to usual DV/HDV option. Look for it to set you back ¥554,400 (or just over $5,000) when it lands in December, with the HDR-FX1000 set to slip out ahead of it on November 10th.
